PLAY BALL . . . ALMOST

It started with a handful of local Italians hoping to play bocce in the North Park Blocks. It ballooned into an $18,000 project that will create the world's first earthquake-proof bocce courts. Through it all, project leaders Bill Marinelli and Dianna Hanken-Hu managed to keep the faith.
Construction finally started Tuesday. There will be two courts, between Northwest Park and Eighth avenues and Glisan and Flanders streets. The first game might be played Easter Sunday.
