BATHING

SANCTUARY

BATHING.SANCTUARY, 2001.

Inspired by the beautifully restored craftmanship of this historic 1929 Irvington home, we worked with the clients to define not only their needs, but also what it means to craft something beautifully in our contemporary culture. D.D. is a fine woodworker, and as such has an immense appreciation and intuitive understanding of detail. We did not want to recreate the 1929 aesthetic; but we did want to speak in its language by working with a number of portland's finest craftspeople. C.C. brought an amazing vision of place, how does one begin their daily rituals, and then shed off the day's stress and relax in a sanctuary of solice.
The design strives for that phenomenological sensation of 'ahhhh... this is my world, do not enter...'
