del CASTELLO

LOFT + GALLERY

collaboration with lamb design studios inc.

delCASTELLO, LDS, 2000-2003.

This beautiful loft is the collaborative effort of the finest contemporary craftspeople in portland, oregon; based upon a common appreciation for the ancient traditions embodied in the assemblages of Italian Architect, Carlo Scarpa.

Located in the historic brick train depot building in the heart of Portland's Pearl District, the del Castello Art Gallery and Loft intertwine the public and private domain through a complex interlocking of sculptural forms. The exposed wood beam structure is experienced throughout the interior and contemporary program elements hover within the shell of the vintage building. New elements are assembled of wood, glass, steel and concrete; reflecting the industrial origins and the raw quality of the building's embodied character. The two levels are linked by a glass stair, which is pinned to a two-story stone wall, bringing order and richness to the interior's interwoven composition.

Exterior elements, such as a new steel and glass canopy harken back to the industrial handi-craft of the historic structure. This is then complimented by more contemporary elements as a contrast, in the form of a ramp, and stair to celbrate the gallery's entrance.
